How to Overcome Fear and Start Your Business

I'm willing to bet there's a worry keeping you up at night / holding you back from really going for it.

...that makes me a sad panda. And nobody likes a sad panda.

When you let fear be in the driver's seat you're on a one-way bus to Lamesville and that place sucks, trust me. They don't even have a Buc-ee's.

The worst part about fear is that it often wears a legit-looking mask. We put off pursuing a goal because we tell ourselves things like:

  • I'll do it when I have the money

  • I'll do it when I have the right degree

  • I'll do it when the kids leave home

...and on and on. We tell ourselves our inaction is because we lack: money, resources, education, experience, time, connections, blah blah blah. Buuuut if we go a little deeper, what's really behind all those excuses is fear. And it paralyzes us.

Real talk? You're probably getting worked up over something that isn't that big a deal. Don't believe me? Lemme prove it to ya. I have a quick exercise to help you REALLY examine your fear/worry/anxiety and realize it's not as bad as you think. Takes about 5 minutes and this shiz is gonna change your day, I promise (plus, maybe help you sleep better tonight so there's that).

Ready? Get a piece of paper and a pen and do this with me:

  • Across the top of your paper, write one sentence describing the goal you've been wanting to pursue, but haven't

  • Below that, divide your paper into 3 columns

  • In the left column, write out the absolute worst case scenario(s) should your attempt at your goal fail (hint: these are the fears keeping you up at night)

  • In the middle column, write out what you can do to minimize your risks of the worst thing(s) happening

  • In the right column, write out what you would do to recover should the worst thing(s) happen

Take a look at your paper. That fear that's been keeping you up at night and holding you back suddenly doesn't seem so bad, right?

Isn't it ridiculously powerful to realize we're afraid of something that's totally preventable and reversible?
