Why It’s Okay to Start Small in Business
Do you ever get overwhelmed with all your big, bad ass ideas? I definitely do. The prob with big, bad ass ideas is that --even though they're exciting and brilliantly awesome-- they can also be, well, a little TOO big. Ya know what I mean?
I see this happen a lot: a friend or a client has a BIG vision. A vision that takes over their every thought. They're borderline annoying because it's all they talk about. They're enthusiastic and ready to make shit happen!
But then...they decide going for it doesn't make sense because it'd be too much to take on and (they believe) there's no way they could pull it off. And they're probably right: making that BIG dream a reality is kinda crazy. Only there's one thing they're forgetting:
It's OKAY to start small.
Let me repeat: it's okay to start small. In fact, I'll plant my flag on the hill and declare it's actually BEST to start small.
Hear me now, believe me later: go big or go home is NOT a sound business strategy.
When we're willing to start small, it means we're willing to learn and grow. Most importantly: it means we're willing to just do the damn thing already. Ya know that old cliche saying, "Rome wasn't built in a day"? Well, it's a cliche because it's TRUE.
Do you dream of owning your own bakery? I bet that feels scary AF, right? Sooo what if you started selling your baked goods at your local farmers market, first? Or take some samples to your neighborhood coffee shop and see if they'd hock your yumminess to the caffeinated masses? You can build on that.
Do you dream of having your pottery carried in West Elm? That's HUGE (I mean, c'mon. It's WEST ELM, boo). Don't feel ready? F*ck that. Open an Etsy shop. Start with 3 pieces. Make them really well. Peeps will be delighted with your product, come back, and ask you to make more. Before you know it, West Elm is knocking on YOUR door.
Do you see how this can apply to you?
Whether you're established and dream of leveling up / branching out your current business *or* you're just getting started and wondering how to make your dream biz happen, starting small can actually be what makes your big dream a reality.
