Why I Almost Killed My Facebook Business Page

I don’t like to follow rules.

Which is why I almost killed my Facebook business page.

Yup. I got a wild hair up my ass recently and thought, "I'm not playing the game anymore. I'm deleting my FB biz page." Why? A few reasons:

  • it honestly doesn't bring me joy (and I'm in the habit of Marie Kondo'ing erry last bit of my life)

  • no matter what I do I literally have flat growth and no engagement

  • like Instagram FB doesn't bring me clients

  • I have a tiny but super fun FB group that I actually do enjoy showing up for and I thought cleaning house would make that easier for me

Also, I really REALLY don't like being told what to do.

So there's a very big part of me that keeps hearing, "businesses HAVE to have Facebook pages or else they'll fail faster than Lindsay Lohan's beach club in Mykonos" --wait, what? Lindsay Lohan had a Greek beach club?? EXACTLY-- and thinking, "oh yeah?? watch me!"

Anyway. What unfolded was an internal battle of every aspect of my chart which is (in case you were wondering):

  • The impulsiveness of Gemini sun sign

  • The analysis paralysis of Libra rising

  • The stubbornness of Tauras moon sign

What's a girl to do? I posted my conundrum in other biz groups...I Googled...I kid you not, I actually almost posted a poll to IG stories...finally, I Marco Polo'd my biz bestie and told her my idea. I was burning FB to the ground! I was going to start a movement! *pitchforks ready, I was storming the digital Bastille!!* I even had the entire email I was going to write to you today all about my blaze of glory torching FB....

Thankfully, my dear pal talked me off the ledge.

Long story long: I decided to keep my FB biz page.

Because we realized this wasn't really the solution to the problem I thought I had. Instead, I redefined the purpose my FB page serves in my business (it'll now simply be a bulletin board, existing solely to share my blog posts + freebies) in relation to the role that original content plays in my business (as marketing). Yes, my friend is a content strategist and thank god for that.

Also, I was listening to Super Soul Conversations and Saint Oprah said, "if you feel conflicted and don't know what to do or what's the right decision...do nothing." So that sealed the deal for me.

Moral to the story? Be intentional with your decision making. Before you go adding or deleting anything in your business make sure that decision is part of a larger strategy. Ask yourself: what problem will this solve? how will this make running my business better or easier?

If you don't have clear answers to those questions --or in my case if you're answer is simply "I don't f*ckin' know but I do what I want so get outta my face"-- just sit down. Pour yourself a glass of wine. Watch some Great British Bake Off then call your most trusted advisor and talk it out until you have those answers crystal clear. Mmkay?
