The Second Step of Marketing

The first time I got engaged was a mistake.

Wait. Have I not told you this story?

...short version: about 15 years ago I was living in The Netherlands. My American boyfriend came to visit and we traveled to Paris where he proposed in front of the Eiffel Tower (yes I'm gonna say it: yuck how cliche).

I didn't wanna marry the guy.

But it's like that episode of Sex and the City when Aiden proposed to Carrie: when a man kneels in front of you with a ring, you say Yes

I was young and figured I'd clean up the mess when I moved back to the States (which I did, thankyouverymuch) plus, we had 10 days left in our vacation together and HOW AWKWARD would that be if I had said NO??

Anyway. Here's the good news for you, boo: in the 5 steps of getting new clients, you don't have to pop the question just yet.

But now that you've ATTRACTED new people into your sphere (step #1) we're onto step #2:

ENGAGE.

  • Once a new potential client hears about you, what do you want them to do next?

    • Mistake: having people learn about you (say, from a podcast interview or a guest blog post, or a workshop you put on) then having no clear CTA (Call to Action)

    • Fix: once people hear about you, tell them EXACTLY what to do next. Eg: visit your website; sign up for your email list; book a discovery call

Yep. Step #2 is really that simple.

To engage with people new to your audience, you simply need to make it crystal clear what you want them to do. Sign up for your email list? Take your webinar? Schedule a free consult?

It's a helluva lot easier than calling off a wedding and returning an engagement ring. Trust me.
